When purchasing a new or used automobile, you really need to think about this purchase. When you are in the market of purchasing an automobile, there are many options and choices. Something a new car buyer should ask is what kind of vehicle would they want and what exactly can they afford.

There are a couple of questions you can ask yourself, that will assist in your decision in purchasing a new car. Are you searching for a certain “look” or symbol, or do you want it to make your life simpler? Are you going to use it to carpool some children around, or are you just going to use it to get to work? If you have a family, do you need the space that a van would give you? Are you looking for just a two-wheel drive car or an all wheel drive car?

- Find out how much you can spend on transportation every month. Another thought is to consider leasing a car, especially if the cost of owning one is going to be more than ten percent of your net income - so you should check your budget.

- Believe it or not, thousand dollar discounts are usually available with most new car purchases, so you should really try and figure out the target price.

- The new car market is extremely competitive. You should always try and haggle with the sellers or dealerships. And definitely shop and compare car prices, specially on the internet.

- Remember the sticker price is not the final price. A lot of times, there are a lot of offers that the dealerships have in place that can save you some money on options or upgrades (like audio systems, low financing, etc). And remember to ask what, if any, other options will cost and what the final price will be. These options will surprise you by how much more they contribute to the price.

- Trading your car in? Remember to get your own assessment of how much it’s worth now before you take the dealerships first offer.

- Compare new car prices. You should go to at least 3 dealerships to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.

You need to be practical when purchasing a car. You don’t want to buy it based on emotion, or based on how good you look in it. You may regret it later on.
